The preference and costs of sleeping under light at night in forest and urban great tits
2019
Artificial light at night (ALAN) is an increasing phenomenon associated with worldwide urbanization. In birds, broad-spectrum white ALAN can have disruptive effects on activity patterns, metabolism, stress response and immune function. There has been growing research on whether the use of alternative light spectra can reduce these negative effects, but surprisingly, there has been no study to determine which light spectrum birds prefer. To test such a preference, we gave urban and forest great tits (Parus major) the choice where to roost using pairwise combinations of darkness, white light or green dim light at night (1.5 lux). Birds preferred to sleep under artificial light instead of dar…
Impact of Green Vegetables and Green Smoothies on Enamel Mineral Composition In Vitro
2019
Background: Recently, smoothies with a high vegetable content have become very popular, especially among young adults. Objectives: This in vitro study was conducted to determine the erosive potential of selected green vegetables and green smoothies on human dental enamel. Methods: A total of ten green smoothies and eight freshly mixed vegetables were chosen, and pH, calcium and oxalic acid contents were measured. The enamel specimens were obtained from wisdom teeth and incubated with 3 selected foods (spinach, parsley, or green smoothie) for 12 and 24 hours (N = 6). Control samples were incubated with a physiological salt solution. An electron probe microanalyzer (Jeol JXA 8900RL) was utili…

Diversity in Itraconazole Cocrystals with Aliphatic Dicarboxylic Acids of Varying Chain Length
2013
The cocrystal formation potential of itraconazole, a potent antifungal drug, with C2–C10 aliphatic dicarboxylic acids has been investigated. Using two experimental screening techniques (solvent-assisted grinding and evaporation-based crystallization), the cocrystals of itraconazole with C2–C7 dicarboxylic acids have been successfully synthesized and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, solid state nuclear magnetic resonance, Raman spectroscopy, and thermal analysis. The characterized multicomponent compounds include anhydrous cocrystals (malonic, succinic, glutaric, and pimelic acids), a cocrystal hydrate (adipic acid), and cocrystal solvates with acetone and tetrahydrofuran (oxalic a…
Microporous alumina membranes electrochemically grown
2003
Abstract The electrochemical fabrication of alumina membranes by anodizing of aluminium in phosphoric acid and oxalic acid solutions, in the temperature interval from −1 to 16 °C, was investigated in order to study the influence of different parameters (initial treatment of aluminium surface, nature and composition of electrolyte, temperature) on the final characteristics of the membranes. Porous layers were grown using a linear potential scan at 0.2 V s −1 up to 160 V in H 3 PO 4 solution and 70 V in oxalic acid solution. The efficiency of porous layer formation was calculated by using Faraday's law and weight measurements. Pore size distribution and porosity of membranes prepared in 0.4 M…
Oxalate and 2,2′-bipyrimidine as bis-chelating ligands in the honeycomb layered compound {[Fe2(bpym)(ox)2]·5H2O}n
2002
The novel two-dimensional iron(II) compound of formula {[Fe2(bpym)(ox)2]·5H2O}n (1) [bpym = 2,2′-bipyrimidine and ox = oxalate dianion] is obtained by reaction of oxalic acid, iron(II) chloride and 2,2′-bipyrimidine in aqueous solution. The structure of 1 is made up of oxalato-bridged iron(II) chains cross-linked by bischelating bpym affording a honeycomb lattice. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility data of 1 show the occurrence of relatively large antiferromagnetic interactions between the high spin iron(II) ions separated by more than 5.5 A through bridging bpym [Jbpym = −4.0(2) cm−1] and ox [Jox = ca. −7.8(2) cm−1] ligands. These values compare well with those obtained in the ir…

Abstract. Historic records of α-dicarbonyls (glyoxal, methylglyoxal), carboxylic acids (C6–C12 dicarboxylic acids, pinic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, phthalic acid, 4-methylphthalic acid), and ions (oxalate, formate, calcium) were determined with annual resolution in an ice core from Grenzgletscher in the southern Swiss Alps, covering the time period from 1942 to 1993. Chemical analysis of the organic compounds was conducted using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) coupled to electrospray ionization high-resolution mass spectrometry (ESI-HRMS) for dicarbonyls and long-chain carboxylic acids and ion chromatography for short-chain carboxylates. Long-term records of the carbo…
Mechanistic Investigations of the BZ Reaction with Oxalic Acid Substrate. I. The Oscillatory Parameter Region and Rate Constants Measured for the Rea…
2004
This paper is the first part of a study reinvestigating the mechanism of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction of oxalic acid, which is the simplest organic substrate for a BZ oscillator. New experiments are performed to find the oscillatory region in 1 M sulfuric acid at 20 °C. The removal rate of the end product bromine by an inert gas stream is a critical parameter here: oscillations can be observed only in a window of that parameter. The “rate constant” for the physical removal of bromine is measured as a function of the gas flow rate and reactor volume; furthermore, the rate constants of three component reactions important in this system are also determined. These are oxygen atom tran…
A Molecular Metal Ferromagnet from the Organic Donor Bis(ethylenedithio)tetraselenafulvalene and Bimetallic Oxalate Complexes
2003
A new dual-function hybrid molecular material has been obtained from the organic donor bis(ethylenedithio)tetraselenafulvalene and the honeycomb oxalate-based bimetallic network [MnCr(ox)3]-. This multilayer material consists of layers of the inorganic anionic 2D network, responsible for the appearance of ferromagnetic ordering below 5.3 K, alternating with segregated layers of the organic cation radical responsible for the transport properties: metal-like conductivity is observed from room temperature down to 150 K.
Influence of gel composition in the synthesis of MoVTeNb catalysts over their catalytic performance in partial propane and propylene oxidation
2010
[EN] MoVTeNb mixed oxides catalysts have been prepared by a slurry method with different molar compositions (Mo/Te ratio from 2 to 6 and Nb/(V + Nb) ratio from 0 to 0.7) in the synthesis gel leading to different crystalline phases distribution and catalytic behaviour in the partial oxidation of both propane and propylene to acrylic acid. Chemical analysis indicates that the composition of samples before and after the heat-treatment changes, especially the Te-content, since a significant amount of Te is lost during the heat-treatment step when the amount of oxalate (from niobium oxalate) increases in the synthesis gel. Thus, the nature of the crystalline phases and the catalytic performance …
